Slieve Carran Nature Reserve: Yellow Route (Burren NP)
There are three walking trails in Slieve Carran Nature Reserve, and the Yellow Route is probably the easiest. Winding through fields, hazel forests and giving way to excellent views of Mullaghmore, this route is a comfortable stroll.
Distance + Time needed
This is a 2km long looped walk that takes about 30 minutes.
Difficulty:
Easy – mostly flat terrain.
How to get there (parking):
The Slieve Carran Nature Reserve cannot be reached by public transport, so you will need your own mode of transport.
As there is no signage guiding you to the Nature Reserve, it would be best to use your ‘Maps’ App to reach the parking spot.
You can find the parking space here.
You can also approach this walk from the opposite site. There is another trailhead here which accommodates parking for approximately five cars.
Getting on the walk:
The starting point of the Yellow Route is on the opposite side of the road from the parking spaces. You will see a small opening in the stone wall and an information signpost to signal the start of the walk.
Follow the yellow discs to stay on the path.
What to expect from the walk:
The first section of the walk offers brilliant views of the limestone hills and Mullaghmore in the distance. The route then veers through a hazel forest and meets up with the starting point again.
The whole walking trail is offroad and hiking boots are advised on days when it has rained/is raining. The terrain is mostly grass, with sections off loose limestone stones and limestone slabs.
It may be a short walk, but one packed with lot of beauty!
Public toilets:
There are no public toilets on this route.
